Christian Sybolism in Beowulf Within the poem Beowulf, the poet utilizes the Christian religion to symbolize the elements of good and evil and Heaven and Hell. Beowulf is the oldest known English epic poem. The manuscripts date back to about 1000 A.D., when two scribes wrote it down for posterity. The poem was handed down from the Anglo-Saxon period, and through the retelling of the poem, it changed a little each time. The poem creates an oral depiction of an epic hero who strived to fight against the forces of evil. There really was a â€Å"historical† Beowulf who helped the Geats and Danes fight off pirates, but he was neither King of the Geats nor Danish hero at any time. During the opening of Beowulf, the poet summarizes the beginning chapters of Genesis in the Bible. The poet tells about â€Å" The Almighty making of the earth, shaping beautiful plains, marked off by oceans, then proudly setting the sun and moon to glow across the land and light it†(7-10). In the Bible, Genesis 1:1 reads, â€Å" In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.† Immediately following this passage, it goes on to explain the history of Creation. Included in this description is how God made light and dark, land and ocean, plant and animal, and finally the ultimate creation, man. God gave the gift of free will to all of His children. Beowulf relies on God’s will and his own strength in his three battles. Beowulf’s first battle is against the evil monster, Grendel. â€Å"Beowulf trusts in his own strength as much as in God’s grace in his battle† (Chickering 272). After his first battle, â€Å"A pang of mortality strikes Beowulf as he looks back at the splendid neck-ring he has been given by Hrothgar as part of his reward for victory over Grendel†(Price 25). After that report was filled against that employee, the company had to conduct some investigations to prove those allegations against that employee. When those customers identified Gibson (employee) for that crime, management team had to take hard decision to suspend and later dismissed Gibson and filled charges against him. However, Gibson was fined by the court oflaw and the company recovered from that damage. Although the court released him from that crime, the manager could not allow him to work for the company for any longer. He was suspended and later dismissed without clearance of salary dues and pension. Three weeks ago, the manager received two grievances from Gibson. First, he was writing to ABC Pharmaceutical Company demanding clearance of his salary due claiming that he worked for that money in the month he was caught committing fraud (Kanungo Manuel, 2014). In sociology and the psychology, the self esteem is the factor that reflects all kinds of the overall emotional evaluation that is of his or her won worth with the judgment of oneself with the attitude of other. As per the assignment, the self esteem encompasses the beliefs and these beliefs reflect that I am competent, I am more valuable or I am worthy of it. The emotions like that of the triumph, despair, pride and shame may occur at the same time. Smith and Mackie have defined the self-concept as it is the positive or the negative evaluations of the self regarding to what kind of feelings we have or what we feel for it. According to Branden, the self esteem is the reflection of the sum of the self confidence that is related to the personal capacity and self respect related to the environment and the feeling of the personal growth. Darling (2000) say s that there is the implicit judgment and every person has the ability to face the lifes challenges with the understanding nature and the solving of the problems and the right that they have regarding to the happiness.
